CRN-I 2011 ANNUAL CONFERENCE REPORT
PUBLISHED IN SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL
―Planning for 2012 conference underway―

Manno, Switzerland, 20 March 2012—The Council for Responsible Nutrition-International (CRN-I), the international arm of the dietary supplement industry’s leading trade association, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), today announced that the conference report from CRN-I’s second scientific symposium, held on 11 November 2011 in Kronberg, Germany, has been published in the peer-reviewed, scientific journal, European Journal of Nutrition.

The CRN-I annual scientific symposium brings together leading scientific, nutrition and regulatory experts from around the world to address the most critical policy and regulatory topics most affecting the global nutrition field. The 2011 conference was attended by nearly 70 distinguished members of the scientific and regulatory community. A panel of thirteen conference participants, including John Hathcock, Ph.D., senior vice president, scientific and international affairs, CRN, developed the conference report, titled “Nutrition issues in Codex: health claims, nutrient reference values and WTO agreements: a conference report.”

In discussing the role that Codex plays in setting policy, the authors noted that, “Codex documents have important roles as templates for national regulations, or as the basis for international trade agreements, and they have a distinctive authority and credibility that is derived from their painstaking development of a consensus in a multistep procedure that may take many years.”

“Over the last two years, we have had the opportunity to bring together the international scientific and regulatory community to engage in discourse,” said Dr. Hathcock. “It is a testament to the level and quality of discourse that takes place at the event itself that the conference report has now been selected for publication two years in a row in highly regarded, peer-reviewed journals.”

The 2010 conference report, titled “Scientific issues related to Codex Alimentarius goals: A review of principles, with examples,” was published in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology.

The third CRN-I scientific symposium is scheduled in Germany for 1 December 2012, which is the Saturday before the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) meeting. The exact location for the CRN-I symposium will be announced once the city location for the CCNFSDU meeting is released.

A fourth CRN-I symposium is also being planned for spring 2013 in conjunction with the Codex Food Additives Committee meeting in China.
